Holiday Movies 2010 (Adaptations)

Christmas is quickly approaching and with Christmas comes a great selection of big box office movies. During my youth, it was a common habit to go to a movie on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Why? Because usually there are some majorly hyped movies coming out around that time. What do we have to look forward this holidays season in terms of books turned movies?

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollow: Part 1 from Warner Bros./Release Date: November 19th
We all know this is going to make a ton of money for months to come after it's November release. It's Harry Potter, for goodness sake. This movie will mark the beginning of the end for our favorite teen trio and it's probably just in time, too.

To be honest, I'm looking more forward to Part 2 (release date: July 2011) than this first part, because I happen to have found the second half of 'Deathly Hollow' far more interesting than the first part. That being said, I wasn't a huge fan of the 'Order of the Phoenix' in book form and enjoyed the movie quite a bit... :-)

'Tangled' from Walt Disney Studios/Release date: November 24th
Based on the story of Repunzel, 'Tangled' looks to be a winner and will surely find an audience come Thanksgiving! The Brothers Grimm version of this iconic tale (published in 1812) was originally based on a 1698 story entitled, "Persinette". Goes to show that fairy tales are never really forgotten.

The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader from Walden Media/Release Date: December 10th
Originally published in 1952, 'Voyage of the Dawn Treader' is finally getting the silver screen treatment. The cast has returned to bring the third Chronicles of Narnia book to life. Hopefully Walden has learned from their mistakes on the almost disastrous 'Prince Caspian'.

What movies are you going to see this holiday season?

you just highlighted the 3 reasons I am psyched about the next three weeks.
I'm actually making Harry Potter Scarves right now for the premier (and general wear)

Thanks so much for reminding us about these highly anticipated films - I know they are in our home! Listen, I wanted to pass a new film along that I recently discovered that came out last month on DVD for you to check out & perhaps review. Homeless for the Holidays is an amazing film that follows an executive that has lost it all & has to take a job at a burger joint - a situation many of our familes can relate to today. If you are looking for a great film for a family movie night, I encourage you to check out Homeless for the Holidays! I have to say that it's perfect for the WHOLE family, which is hard to find these days.

I am looking forward to both Harry Potter and Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

The Narnian chronicles were a huge part of my childhood and whilst the movie adaptation have had some negatives reviews I enjoy them.

Harry Potter , meanwhile, has been a huge part of my CHILDREN'S childhood: particularly my daughter who could only have been 4 (maybe younger) when she saw the first movie.

But I also enjoy young adult fiction for myself. Indeed it was i who introduced the family to the very first book when it was almost new.
So happy weeks ahead I hope.

Letter4no1, Melissa, Lesli, and Richard-- Thanks for the comments!

I expected more family friendly blockbusters this holiday season, but was quite surprised to find that it's pretty much these three!

For sure, I'll be seeing Harry Potter opening weekend. I can't be spoiled now can I!!! Course I'm already dreading the wait between part 1 and part 2!!

Leslie- I'll have to check that movie out! :-)

Richard- I grew up on The Chronicles of Narnia series (the books and the BBC specials they aired in the 80's/90's), too. I think all Narnia fans are able to find some redeeming qualities in the movies.

I really tried to like the newest Prince Caspian adaptation, but I found it too centered the battle. The ending sequence, however, is one of my favorites. It was put together so well!!!

All three of those movies are on my "To watch" list. I'm particularly excited about Tangled, since I'm a cartoon and animation lover.

I was disappointed with Prince Caspian but understand why I didn't like it so much: the original story was quite short, so they needed to pad it out for film-length, therefore taking it away from the original (which was my least favourite anyway.) I'm really hoping they're back on form for Dawn Treader - I love that one. Going to see Harry Potter next week with my sister - during school hours so the cinema isn't too full. Also want to see Tangled, but I don't know when that is out over here.
