The Host: Movie News- Extra Photo

One of my top ten favorite reads is 'The Host' by Stephenie Meyer.  The movie started production earlier this month.  While news is slow coming and pictures even slower, a local extra's snapshot recently hit the web.  It shows five girls in 50's style fashions.  It seems this adds fuel to the rumors that the host society has a 'retro' feel to it.

While I never pictured the world in 'The Host' to be at all inspired by the 50's, I can see why the filmmakers decided to go that route.  If you think about it, the hosts values are similar to the idea of the 1950's.  People were taught to be pleasant, amiable, rule abiding, perfect.  A lot like how the hosts.  On a side note, I've always been a fan of 50's fashions, so if this movie brings them back, that would be awesome.

More information on this film can be found at 'The Host Movie News'.

The Official Cast of 'The Host'

IMDB has listed the actors who are destined to play the four main leads in 'The Host' movie adaptation. (See my Fantasy Cast here!) We've known Wanderer for quite some time, but now we know who her male leads are!

Playing Ian is Jake Abel, or as I like to call him "the kid from Supernatural". Actually, I think Jake may do a good job.  He's a talented guy.

Playing (obnoxious, pig headed, stubborn-- your pick!) Jared is Max Irons. I haven't actually seen him in anything. Personally, I pictured Jared to be older looking, but we'll see how this turns out. Maybe it will work out well? Fun tidbit, he is the son of Jeremy Irons.

And playing lovable, gun wheeling Jeb is William Hurt. I still prefer my choice for the role over Mr. Hurt, but with a new wardrobe, some make up, and a gun, maybe he'll be the perfect Jeb. Maybe...  (Off topic, he looks an awful lot like the Fifth Doctor, doesn't he?)

So far, no one else has been officially added to the cast.  What do you think of these new additions?

At The Movies: And 'The Host' finally has a Melanie!

So, remember Stephenie Meyer's other book, 'The Host'? The movie rights were sold years ago and finally we have some solid proof that a movie will eventually come to the silver screen! Here are the facts...

According to IMDB, the movie will hit theaters March 2013, being distributed by Open Road Films.

And even better? They've announced the actress chosen to play main character Wander/Melanie-- Saoirse Ronan (credits: The Lovely Bones, City of Ember, Atonement). Jared and Ian have not yet been cast (or news hasn't hit the web about it yet!). With Saoirse cast, I'm sure we'll be hearing more cast updates soon.

My thoughts? I've only seen the girl act in 'City of Ember', but I don't mind the producers choice. She has that 'quirky' look (Picture) that I always pictured Wanderer to have. The only problem I see is that she looks a little young for the person I deemed in my fantasy cast to play Ian-- Ian Somerhalder. She would work well with my Jared-- Matt Lanter.

So, keep your eyes out for 'The Host' movie news!  I'm sure we'll be seeing more soon!!!!  (And if you haven't read the book-- read it!  If you can't get through the first 100 pages, I totally understand-- they're long winded.  Just skip them!  Start at 101 and you'll be hooked.  :p )

Heads Up! Twilight: The Graphic Novel, Volume 2 Is On Its Way!

I don't know about you, but I really enjoyed Volume one of 'Twilight: The Graphic Novel'. The art was beautifully done and the characters were far closer to what I believe Edward and Bella would look like than, say, their movie counterparts.

Back in March 2010, I totally expected to get volume two within a few months of volume one, especially with volume one only covering half of the novel. Alas, it is now June 2011 and we have just received a release date from Yen Press for volume two. 'Twilight: The Graphic Novel, Volume 2' will be debuting October 2011 in hardcover and ebook format.
To be completely honest, I think having to wait a year and a half for this volume might hurt it. For sure, I will read it, but can I invest another $22.00 in a series that may or may not get finished in a timely manner? I've been spoiled with manga series releasing three or four volumes a year and understand the differences between those and 'Twilight: The Graphic Novel', but I wish Yen Press had come up with more of a plan in terms of releasing them in a timely, scheduled manner...

Anyway, to answer my own question, I will probably, totally buy it. I own the first one, why not buy the second? I just *really* hope that it concludes the 'Twilight' novel and doesn't stop right before the action starts in the third portion of the book! I don't know if I could wait another year and a half for another volume of 'Twilight'!

I Want To Meet Stephenie Meyer....

Readers might know that I had the chance to really talk with Stephenie Meyer during her first tour back when Twilight was pretty unknown. Well, I blew it. I have this problem sometimes... I never know what to say to famous authors, actors, singers... I usually just smile and say thanks. Had I known then what Twilight would turn into, you bet I would have talked Ms. Meyer's ear off!!!

Well, I'm having a bit of a Twi-hard moment here because... Well... I just saw this contest posting on The Twilight Saga website... A chance to meet Stephenie Meyer in an undisclosed place and ask her whatever you want!!! Man, I want to win this. I want to win this so bad! Not only does it involve meeting Stephenie Meyer, but it involves traveling, which is always a nice perk!

This contest got me to wondering what I would ask if I did get a chance to meet her again... And honestly, I'm not sure... I have a lot of Twilight questions, but probably more questions about The Host. *SPOILER* (Like, why was Wanderer put in such a weak body at the end?!) *END OF SPOILER*  This whole contest feels very reminiscent of Willy Wonka and the golden tickets.  Well, I want a golden ticket, please!

Check out contest details HERE. And good luck! (Although, I still want to win!)

Fantasy Cast: The Host

Now that the Twilight movie franchise is almost complete, it's time to look to another Stephenie Meyer title-- 'The Host'. 'The Host' is one of my favorite books and I really hope they do it justice on the silver screen.

For you enjoyment, here is my fantasy cast for 'The Host'.

Ian Somerhalder (credits: Vampire Dairies, Lost) as Ian:

Ian is perfect for the role of, well, Ian. He has the look and the acting chops!

Matt Lanter (credits: 90210, The Clone Wars) as Jared:

Matt is under-rated as an actor. Take him out of the 90210 environment and I think we'll see a lot from him. Jared is a tough character to cast because he has to be a semi-likable jerk through most of the movie. Dress him up like the 26 year old he is and I think Matt could accomplish that (and win a few hearts while doing it).

Runner up for Jared: Eoin Macken (credits: Merlin)

Jason Behr (credits: Roswell) as Kyle:

I wanted to find an actor that looked like he could be related to Ian. Jason bears a bit of a resemblance. I think this movie could thrive as an ensemble piece as long as it's not cluttered down with 'blockbuster' actors. Jason worked wonders in his 'Roswell' years working in an ensemble and could do the same here as Kyle.

Jeff Fahey (credits: Lost) as Jeb:

It was hard picking Jeb! I went through so many-- John Goodman, Treat Williams... But I think I have my favorite. Jeff Fahey played the pilot on Lost during the last few seasons and he kind of looks like the Jeb I was looking for. Plus, along the same lines as Jason, he works well in an ensemble!!!

William Sadler (credits: Roswell) as Doc:

I don't know about any physical description, but I always pictured doc older and skinny (not built). William Sadler would be perfect. He plays emotional well and has good comedic timing. Most importantly, he has a friendly persona that comes off swimmingly on screen!

Jemima Rooper (credits: Hex)as Melanie/Wanderer:

I found it really hard to pick Melanie/Wanderer's actress. I'm not 100% happy with this casting, but I think Jemima Rooper might be a good pick.  That being said, who would you place here?

So there you have it. My fantasy cast for 'The Host'. How does it compare to yours? Who do you think should play Wanderer? What characters do they need to get right for you to watch this adaptation?

News: Stephenie Meyer Does It Again!

According to Yahoo!, 'The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner: An Eclipse Novella' has sold over 1 million copies.  That is quite good considering it's only been out for a little over a month!

If you haven't purchased your copy yet, remember that until July 5th, the book is being hosted on a dedicated site to read in its entirety for free.  Yes, free!  Head over and check it out.

I haven't read 'The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner: An Eclipse Novella' yet, mostly due to the fact that I had completely forgotten about the character featured. I had to look around the web to figure out who she was.   I actually doubt I'll ever read it, even though I am a recovering Twi-hard, because even after learning who the character was, I still wasn't too interested.

Me thinks I'll just hold off until the fantastically lucky Stephenie Meyer comes out with some new universe-- or a sequel to 'The Host'

Review: Twilight: The Graphic Novel by Young Kim

Title: Twilight: The Graphic Novel
Author/Illustrator: Young Kim, Stephenie Meyer
Genre: Graphic Novel, Romance, YA, Supernatural
Perfect for: Shoujo and Twilight  fans!

I'll be honest, I used to be a Twihard.  I read all the books within a week of their release, went to a few midnight releases, and even have a hardcover (signed) and a paperback (travel copy) of the original printings of "Twilight".  I thought I had overcome this Twihard thing, until I found myself face to face with the fantastic cover of "Twilight: The Graphic Novel".  As well as being a recovered Twihard, I also choose books by covers and this cover drew me in instantly.

Let me start with the story.  If you've read "Twilight", there are no surprises here.  The story follows Bella as she starts life in her fathers home town of Forks.  There she meets Edward Cullen and and her life changes in ways she never imagined.  The graphic novel is adapted quite nicely.  Those who found "Twilight" slow or to 'inside Bella's head' should like its fast paced narrative.  Most of the essential bits from Bella arriving in Forks to seeing him 'sparkle' in the meadow are translated effortlessly to the graphic novel format.  Key lines are kept intact, while, for good reason, others are paraphrased.  The novel stops with the meadow, so don't expect this to be a complete adaptation of "Twilight".  Expect each book to be broken up into at least two graphic novels, if not three.

The greatest thing about the graphic novel is not the fine adaptation, but the fantastic artwork by artist Young Kim.  The Bella and Edward he created are more like 'my' Edward and Bella than the movie ever  will.  The glossy black and white illustrations with occasional color thrown in are pleasing to the eye.  The drawing style is a good mix of traditional disney-esc and manga.  Kim's drawings really help readers see Bella's and Edwards emotions, as opposed to telling us with text.  The illustrations really were the main thing that drew me to picking this title up.  I'm sure you'll love them!

The only problem I have with this book is the binding and price.  Twenty-One dollars is mighty high for a comic book, especially one that is only volume one of many.  While I usually love hardcovers, it seems a bit much to bind comics in the hardcover  format in volume form.  Why not wait till all the volumes of "Twilight: The Graphic Novel" are out and in print?  It's rare for me to even want to pay ten dollars for a paperback manga these days, let alone twenty for a hardcover that isn't a compilation.  I would have preferred this to be in a more affordable format (ie paperback) than in the (however nice) hardcover/glossy one Yen Press decided to go for.

Overall, though, regardless of what I think of the price, I am happy with this adaptation.  I'd even say I prefer this to the movie versions that are so popular at the moment.  Enjoy this read!

Valentines Day Reads

Happy Valentines Day to all my readers!  I hope the 14th brings you laughter and joy-- or a least a box of chocolates!

Need some sappy, beautiful, hilarious titles that are perfect for Valentines Day?  I thought you might!  Here are some of my favorite romance'y titles to read!  Enjoy my Valentines Day Reads!

1- "Twilight" by Stephenie Meyer: Regardless of my opinion of the sequels, "Twilight" is awesome chick lit.  It is full of sappy romance, which I frankly don't mind in the least!

2- "Certain Slant of Light" by Laura Whitcomb:  This ghost story has a great deal of beautiful, lyrically written romance that I love.  The story follows two ghosts as they discover love again, as well as work on why they are stuck on the ghostly plain.  Beautiful story!

3- "Hana Yori Dango"/"Boys Over Flowers" by Yoko Kamio:  This shoujo manga series is good for any age group, be it YA or adult.  The love 'square' is one of the best I've read in a manga series so far.  The story follows Makino, a poor girl who attends a rich school, as she encounters the gorgeous and rich 'leaders' of the school known as F4, and slowly finds her life increasingly entangled with theirs.

4- "Full Moon [W]o Sagashite" by Arina Tanemura:  Another shoujo manga, this title is about a girl who has cancer who has always wanted to sing.  When two shinigami enter her life and grant her the chance to live her dream with the time she has left by changing her into a teenage pop star, she leaps at the chance.  While the description doesn't make it seem romantic, this title really does have one of the cutest relationships I've read in manga form.
